NEWPORT COUNTY WIN THE BOWLING BALL (They can keep it)

Almost unnoticed and certainly unloved, the final (hopefully) FAW Premier Trophy final took place tonight between Newport County and Llanelli, County winning 1-0 on home turf.

The competition promised much, including Euuropean competition for its winners but delievered nothing except a rather useful £100,000 prize money.

Its format, however, was always flawed. Created by BBC Wales at a time it lost its rugby contract to S4C and found itsself with a sports department, a sports budget and the tricky problem of no sport ... it was forced to come up with this half-baked idea.
Its spotlight was non-existent, it disgraceully undermined and devalued the Welsh Cup and, for Cardiff and Swansea, it was always little more than a youth/reserve team run out as the fixtures came at a time of season where there were more pressing matters in their calendars.

Good riddance to bad rubbish as far as this blog is concerned.

Here's a report on tonight's final from the BBC website.
