CARDIFF CITY's proposed deal to bring midfielder and former Russia skipper Alexei Smertin to the club on a season's loan with a deal agreed with Fulham who were also willing to paty the bulk of his wages has fallen through.
Not becuase of work permit issues but because this blog understands the player himself wasn't keen to come to Ninian Park.
It leaves City in desparate need of a midfielder but they may now have to wait until the Premiership loan window opens in a week to try their luck elsehwere.
