It somehow seems inevitable during these troubled economic times that some football outifts will go to the wall and Merthyr alread stand on the edge.
The club need £50,000 just to get through this season and recently raid £10,000 through supporters and over £2,000 contributed at a bucket collection at the recent Cardiff City vs QPR clash. City also played Merthyr pre-season, they do every summer, which swells club coffers as it's by far their biggest attanedance and income of the year.
Now City will return to help the club who currently have electric and gas turned off by British Gas - ironically sponsors of the league in which they currently lie 3rd and may get promoted from - while water was also been cut off.
A midweek game was due to be posptoned which could have had consequences but weather helpfully intervened and waterlogged the pitch.
City boss Dave Jones told the South Wales Echo that: "We are in the fortunate position to help one of our fellow Welsh clubs out, I will field a strong side. Obviously our internationals will be away, but it will keep the players ticking over for the return of the Championship fixtures.
“As a club, we have been monitoring the situation at Merthyr and, hopefully, this fixture can help them out a bit. Our supporters have been fantastic, both home and away, and I already know that, with the links we have with Merthyr, this fixture will be well supported by our own fans.”
