As this was the same figure that City reportedly turned down for the player last week, it seemed unlikely to succeed but there was a period of anxiety as Sky Sports News splashed details of the bid. However within 20 minutes came confirmation that Cardiff had declined it.
No news yet on whether Stoke will increase their bid, Smertin's work permit, anyone else joining or anyone, particularly Thommo, leaving.
The window remains open until 11pm and there are suspicions of frantic last minute activity but hopefully not at Cardiff unless it means arrivals although Smertins seems to be the only one planned at present.
