Videos of the Week - Buddy Holly

It was 50 years ago today that Buddy Holly met his untimely death, his plane brought down in a snowstorm and also killing Ritchie Vallens and The Big Bopper.

For all my varied music tastes and my love of rock, indie and punk, I've always been a huge fan of Buddy and frequently listen to his material and back catalogue. I've watched the Buddy Holly Story several times and seen the stageshow a couple of times too. Not sure it's good for my street cred to confess this but that's how much I love the guy and his music.

His legacy is still there to this day, without Buddy so much of music as we know it would not be there. As Don MacLean famously sings in American Pie, this was "the day the music died".

Tomorrow evening, BBC4 has a Buddy Holly Night. This may just put you in the mood.

Rave On is one of my fave Buddy songs, the only one I can sing well at Karaoke.

Here's Buddy performing Peggy Sue live in 1958

And finally, from the excellent Buddy Holly Story movie, here's Gary Busey as Buddy recreating one of his early performances of Oh Boy! and It's So Easy.
