FOWLER SET TO SIGN ON AT BLACKBURN

It is being reported that Cheeky Scouse Scamp Robbie Fowler is to seal a short-term contract until Christmas by Premiership side Blackburn Rovers and could well feature in their squad to face Arsenal this weekend.

Fowler disgracefully walked out on Cardiff City this summer in favour for training at Blackburn after agreeing a 1 year deal at Ninian Park.

Fan reaction in Blackburn was muted with reports of Fowler looking as slowly, lazy and unfit - just as many observed him at Cardiff wondering why we were offering him a new deal anyway.

Incredibly, Fowler - via his agent - approached Peter Ridsdale a fortnight ago asking if the offer was still available. He was given a curt response. The thought had crossed my mind that Fowler was once again using City. If we had said yes, it would have been perfect leverage for him to get a better offer from Blackburn who, initially, were offering a week-by-week deal.

All I can say is Blackburn and Ince must be desparate to want Robbie. I really expect to see him do absolutely nothing there.

PARRY’S ‘AVING A LAUGH with OFFICIAL CLUB STATEMENT

Cardiff City issued a club statement just a couple of hours before the Moscow kick-off (wonderful timing) on the Paul Parry walk out from the Welsh squad by saying he (that's Parry) loves Wales and Welsh football and is disappointed at the reaction in some quarters.

TOUGH SHIT PAUL

A rare sight?

Parry looking happy for Wales!

He’s obviously got a problem with Toshack but it’s no excuse to abandon his country, especially in the uncaring manner that he did. I love him as a Cardiff City footballer, always will, but I’ve lost all respect for him as a person and a Welshman.

Official club statement (why on earth have City got involved and carrying on the debate?)

TONIGHT'S CARDIFF CITY PHONE-IN

You can listen or download this evening's show recorded justb after the narrow and unloucky loss in Russia and also listen to proud Under 21 boss 24 hours after Wales youngsters won their qualifying group with a magnificent victory against the odds in Romania.

WORLD CUP GAME 2: RUSSIA 2 WALES 1

Wales, shorn of stars and experience, performed brilliantly but agonisingly lost to a late winner in a 2-1 defeat to Euro semi-finalists Russia in Moscow, also managing to miss a penalty. A superb effort, certainly not the humilition some of us feared, but no points

Wales were vastly inexperienced, Paul Parry’s childish uncaring retirement and Jason Koumas’ injury from the weekend further hurting a nation already missing the likes of Gabbidon, Collins, Nyatanga, Bellamy, Eastwood amongst others. Playing 4-5-1 with Sam Vokes as the Lone Raider up front, it was a damage limitation exercise.

Vokes was one of 5 Under 21 players, two more were on the bench making the achievement of the boys to beat Romania 3-0 away and win their Under 21 group last night all the more remarkable.

Russia were at full strength, 9 of their starters played in the summer Euro2008 semi-final, the other two were suspen ded from that match. Up front were the lethal due of Arshavin and Pavylencehnko, the latter just signed by Spurs for £16M.

Wales started well looking solid and Russia didn’t put a shot on goal until 13 minutes but it needed Hennessey to produce a great stop as Arshavin got behind Bale and teed up Pavylenchenko unmarked by the penalty spot.

However by the quarter mark, the course of the game changed with two decisive moments with different outcomes. First Bale skipped into the area and was clipped by a poor challenge by the
Russian skipper for a shock penalty. I screamed YESSSS but it soon turned to SSSHHHIITTT as Bale hit an identical penalty to Koumas in the Azerbaijan match which produced an identical easy save for the Russian keeper. That’s criminal.

As if the miss wasn’t punishing enough, Hennessey chased a ball he didn’t need to and Morgan trying to tidy up caught a Russian for the game’s second penalty in 6 minutes, PAVYLENCHENKO cheekily clipped it a fraction over a sprawled Hennessey and, already, you felt Wales’ were now chasing a lost cause.

The half-hour produced a cheer as I heard the name Joe Ledley mentioned for the first time, a good turn and cross but taken by the Russian keeper as the home nation, backed by a vocal sell crowd at Locomotive Moscow’s club ground, dominated but by playing in second gear and the passed and strolled about.

The Russians were looking guilty of overplay and complacency approaching the interval. And were nearly caught out as Ledley ghosted in at the post meeting a Davies diagonal ball but he hit it wide across the goal before realising a foul had been given for a Vokes push.

Half-time: Russia 1 Wales 0

The second half opened as the first finished - with the Russians looking sloppy and an organised Wales showing more confidence and freedom to the extent that they carried more threat and had more possession although forays into the opposition box never quite produced a goal threat. Encouragingly however , every time Wales put the ball in the box, they had three men there.
On the hour, Ched Evans - more powerful and direct - replaced Sam Vokes after his thankless and draining taks as the lone front man but Russia had an immediate chance to finish it as Gunter slipped allowing the world class Arshavin a free header which, thank you thank you, he put over.

However, on 67 minutes, a truly magical moment. Gareth Bale, so impressive getting forward, produced brilliance to squeeze between two defenders to surge into the box and fire across the face of goal, the Russian keeper couldn’t get there and MR CARDIFF CITY JOE LEDLEY was on hand to place home into the unguarded net. Mayhem in Moscow as the travelling 250 Welsh fans danced and mayhem in my home as I spilled my can!

Predictably, the Russians made changes and set about waking up again to throw everything at Wales but it was Proud Cymru who had the next opportunity as Bale, once again flying forward, who fired over from just outside the box.

With 12 minutes left, a strange moment as Ricketts held up a throw in as Wales were ready to make a change. The officials would not allow it and then booked Ricketts, the 4th Welsh player to get a yellow card, and then Toshack too! The change came - Evans as an extra defender for Edwards in midfield - before a promising moment as Bale won a 20 yard free-kick but the normally superb set piece taker hit it without pace at the keeper.

However disaster struck with 10 remaining as Arshavin teased Gunter, his chipped ball gave Zuryanov who se free header was superbly stopped by Hennessy with with Welsh defenders all over the place, PODGREBNYAK smashed the rebound home low.

The Russians, back in the ascendancy after Wales had produced a magnificent heroic half, almost made it 3 as Hennessy palmed Pavylenchenko’s 20 yard drive around the post but again Wales responded as Ricketts, after promising build up, fired high and wide

Three minutes of added time and Wales applied pressure at the death with Gunter denied a penalty appeal and caught offside as final whistle blew.

Not the result we wanted but an outstanding performance which we should all be proud about. A full strength Russia only just scraping past a Welsh side with well over half our boys missing is a tremendous effort. Unlucky boys but well done.

NEW STADIUM "TOPPED OUT"

Yesterday saw the incredibly fast emerging Cardiff City stadium 'topped out' (marking the build reaching its highest point).

News from the Echo including video pieces by Peter Ridsdale and Steve Borley are here (plus a bit about egg chasing but we don't like to talk about that!)

EURO U21: ROMANIA 0 WALES 3 - WALES WIN GROUP

Despite the likes of Wayne Hennessey, Joe Ledley, Ched Evans, Sam Vokes and Gareth Bale being with the senior team, WALES produced an outstanding result and performance to demolish Romania on their own patch and win their Euro Under 21 group and avenging a home loss to the same opposition last month.

Due to the vagaries of the tournament, Wales still don't qualify for next year's finals in Sweden but they will be seeded in a play-off - which unfortunately clashes with next month's qualifiers against Lichenstein and Germany and could mean more absences.

It was an epic team performance but the star of the pitch was Aaron Ramsey who ran the show in midfield. Cardiff City's Darcy Blake was involved but taken off in the first half with a facial injury.
Hagi, Natase, Commeneci, Ceaucescu, Mutu - Your boys got one hell of a beating.
Are you watching Paul Parry - that's what being Welsh is all about!

PARRY - "I felt like a spare part with Wales" but does that excuse him?

PAUL PARRY revealed the reasons behind his shock decision to walk out on Wales just as they were preparing for tomorrow's World Cup qualifier in Russia - in which he was likely to play a key role - and his international retirement.

As per my initital thoughts on this blog yesterday, Paul has thrown his toys out of the pram just becuase he was a non-playing substitute in last weekend's victory over Azerbaijan and there are hints, which I've also had confirmed privately, of Parry being the latest player to not have respect for strict old school manager John Toshack.

Some Cardiff City fans are offering their sympathies because he is a Bluebird, some due to a dislike of Toshack continuing to alienate key men but my wrath remains for Parry himself.

I'll always respect him as a Cardiff City player but I'll never respect his actions here. John Toshack stood by Parry while he, self-imposed, ruled hiself out of playing for Wales for 18 months. He was welcomed back and stood to play tomorrow in a vital game.

Toshack, undoubtedly, is a difficult man for modern day footballers to get along with. It is particularly noticeable how a significant number of older players have fallen out with him but Parry, and players of his ilk, show a shocking lack of commitment to the cause.

It's the curse of the modern player. Four years ago, Parry would have crawled from Ninian Park to Millennium Stadium to play for his country regardless of manager. Now he has big money, flash car, property and a glamorous WAG, he has forgotten where he's come from.

Hopefully, Parry will now concentrate on Cardiff City although he's not being selected as a striker which is where he'd wish to play and isn't an automatic start. Wonder if he'll sulk next time Dave Jones drops him?

ECHO DISCUSS PARRY'S WELSH RETIREMENT

Paul Parry's apparent display of petulance in storming out of the Wales camp as they prepared to fly to Moscow and his decision to retirement from international football, after John Toshack and supporters stood by him in his previous self-imposed 18 month absence, is generally being condemned by football supporters including those of his club, Cardiff City.
The Echo have covered the story and, included in the below weblink, is an audio discussion which is worth a listen.
.

McCORMACK IN THE TIMES

A frank interview by Ross McCormack intoday's Times in which he doesn't hold back with his claims;

- He wants to be in The Premiership but thought joining Cardiff was the best way to help that.

- All four sides he's faced in the Championship so far with Cardiff City would be 3rd behind Rangers and Celtic if they were in Scotland, the standard here is much greater.

- Doncaster passed City off the park

- He thinks the best City can do is, "maybe sneak into the Top 6"

You can read it here:
.

PAUL PARRY QUITS INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL FOR WALES

CARDIFF CITY WIDE MAN COME STRIKER PAUL PARRY HAS ROCKED WELSH FOOTBALL BY WITHDRAWING FROM THE SQUAD TO PLAY IN RUSSIA ON WEDNESDAY AND DECLARING HIS RETIREMENT FROM INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL.

This amazing development was confirmed by the FAW this morning (http://www.faw.org.uk/news/1131)

Parry had only just returned from a self imposed exile which he officially put down last month to divorce and children problems from his previous relationship but confirmed all of this was now behind and he declared his future availablity for Wales.

So why the about turn??? And what do you feel about players who do this??? Why did he put himself through all of that to get back for Wales, talk about his personal problems etc only to back out again?

There's obviously more to the story than we'll find out (officially anyway) but, got to say, I was very surprised that Toshack ignored him last Saturday while gving the kids their chance.

I cannot condone it but I can imagine Parry thinking if he can't get on the pitch for Wales when they're missing so many players and they can't look to bring him off the bench in a game where they're struggling, what's the point in him being there? I'd be shocked if that thoguht didn;'t enter his mind.

Hopefully Wales loss and City's gain but I hate things like this happening with my country. Parry has let himself down and his country down, it leaves a bitter taste.

**UPDATE**UPDATE**UPDATE**
An anonymous source has said, "Tosh told him he would be starting the game in Moscow, he apparently said it was too late (he felt he should have played on Saturday) and walked out of the team hotel." which, if true, confirms my suspicions as posted above. Not that it makes it right though Mr Parry!!
.

CHED EVANS BACK IN CITY'S SIGHTS

Rumours circulate that Cardiff City are renewing attempts top bring Welsh international striking starlet Ched Evans to Ninian Park on loan.

The Mirror believes Dave Jones wants him while Peter Ridsdale is keen to find the deal. Ched has recently stated he was not keen to leave Manchester City but he will have to review his options after last week's amazing buyout of the club by Abu Dhabi trillionaires (whatever that is) at a club who have already purchased three new World Class forwards.

This means he's already pushed back, almost certainly out of the 16 and forzen completely out of the picture.

Ched is powerful, the sort of player who adds a cutting edge and can push Cardiff from mid-table to serious play-off chasers in my opinion. I'd love to see it but I guess we'll get all sorts of rumours with the play-off window open again.

C'Mon Hughsey and Ched, help your countrymen!

DEVO WAS RIGHT ABOUT EVERYTHING

Like this song and vid by UK group The Attery Squash which I'm sure would make DEVO smile.

CARDIFF CITY MEN IN WORLD CUP ACTION

Only Joe Ledley, Paul Parry and Eddie Johnson saw winning starts in the opening games of World Cup 2010 ... and it was only Joe Ledley who played out of that trio, the other two had nothing more than bench warming duties.

LEDLEY and PARRY were, of course, members of the Wales squad who scraped their way to late victory over Azerbaijan.

EDDIE JOHNSON was an unused substitute in USA's workmanlike 1-0 victory in Havana, Cuban on a poor pitch with poorer light due to floodlit failure.

KEVIN McNAUGHTON and GAVIN RAE both missed Scotland's ill feted disaster in Macedonia due to injury, the Scots losing 1-0 but ROSS McCORMACK shone for their Under-21's in the latest victory.

City's unwanted forward WARREN FEENEY, now on a season's loan with Willo Flood at Dundee United, played a full 90 minutes for Northern Ireland but they failed in Slovakia, losing 2-1.

WALES 1 AZERBAIJAN 0 in pictures

There's a selection to view here. Quality's a bit dubious at times as you're so far and high away from the pitch and action ... although I did sneak my way to middle tier halfway line amongst the dignitaries for the 2nd half.

If you are having problems viewing with above link, copy/paste the following into your browser:

WORLD CUP QUALIFIER 1: WALES 1 AZERBAIJAN 0

Wales' World Cup campaign starting in highly unconvincing style, but at least a win, as they scraped home to a 1-0 victory over Azerbaijan, thanks to Sam Vokes' appropriately scrappy 83rd minute winner and this after Jason Koumas missed a penalty while Azerbaijan had a men sent off at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium.

Vokes to the rescue

It was an awful day so the roof was closed and an awful crowd. I was surprised to later hear it was over 17,000 as you felt it was much less but that's still fewer than Cardiff City are getting these days. It was hard to tell when just about all fans were on the one side of the pitch in the three tiers of stands which meant your only views left, right and head were empty seats. Even with that pitiful turnout, hundreds were still outside after the game started as too few ticket booths were available for the walk up crowd causing massive queues in Westgate Street.

Wales are badly hit with injury problems, especially in defence, so the likes of Collins, Eastwood, Nyatanga, Bellamy and Gabbidon were absent but, even so, most fans were shocked and upset to see John Toshack employ a 4-5-1 system against improving but still lowly opponents, especially as that lone striker was 5'7" Robert Earnshaw.

Joe Ledley joined him and other ex-Cardiff City men on display, in a side including 6 Under 21 internationals, were Chris Gunter and Jason Koumas. Paul Parry was on the bench but never used even though I'd argue there was a crying need for his directness.

The first half was poor, Wales looking half decent in their approach play but with nothing to offer in the final third. Their only efforts were from distance, the Azer keeper making fine stops from Koumas and the excellent Gareth Bale while Joe and Earnie both put efforts wide. Azerbaijan also tested Hennessey to the full with their only meanignful effort of the game, another distance shot producing a sprawling save.

The second half was no better and going nowhere until it suddenly sparked into life in the final quarter. Wales won a 67th minute penalty, Chris Gunter going wide of a defender in the box and going down a little theatrically but contact was there.

Relief for Wales soon became agony however as Koumas put it at perfect height to save and the Azer keeper also grabbed JK's rebound effort. Azerbaijan, managed by Scotland failure Bertie Vogts, were now relieved but that immediately turned to agony too as their Brazilian born midfielder Ramim was sent off his second yellow, ironically a foul against Koumas.

Wales finally threw on subs with Ched Evans, powerful, and Sam Vokes, finally providing some aerial menace, as two up front. I felt sorry for Earnie as he was taken off after going it alone for 70 minutes.

Vokes brought two superb headed saves from the keeper who then stopped a powerful Bale shot but with time running out, the resulting corner saw a scramble, Evans got a touch and VOKES stroked home through a crowd from 5 feet. The place celebrated as if it was the World Cup Winner rather than a 'get out of jail' card.

Wales now go to Moscow to face Russia on Wednesday afternoon. They may surprise us but on this showing, it really does look like a damage limitation exercise. You get the feeling Arshavin and co are going to enjoy taking on our rookies.

In the other group game today, Germany won 6-0 in Lichenstein.

RAIN, RAIN, RAIN, RAIN, RAIN, RAIN, RAIN, RAIN, RAIN, RAIN, RAIN

After the most rotten wettest summer I can recall inmmy lifetime, I (follishly) hoped that at least we might get an Indian Summer or a few dry days before the nights get dark but no chance.

So far, September has beeen even worse. It hasn't just rained every day, it's p*ssed down every day. My step-daughter's school in Barry (St Richard Gwyn) has shut since midweek as, for the secomd year running, it has flooded meaning she has effectively been on holidays again after just 2 days going back to school from the (so called) "Summer" holidays. Nice work if you can get it!
There's some photos on the effects of this rain in South Wales
on BBC website, many of them in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Cardiff's Gay Pride event has been cancelled ... so if we see plenty of pink and glitter at Millennium Stadium later when Wales play Azerbaijan ... thankfully a stadium with a roof ... I guess we'll know why.

TONIGHT'S CARDIFF CITY PHONE IN SHOW

Download tonight's show and have a listen using the link below:

ESPN web asks, "WHY IS EDDIE JOHNSON STILL IN THE USA NATIONAL SQUAD?"

Why's it me they're all talking about?

A damning article, and reader comments, have appeared on the ESPN website regarding Cardiff City loan striker Eddie Johnson.

Ahead of USA's World Cup qualifiers against Cuba and Trindad & Tobago in the next few days, the article seriously questions why team manager Bob Bradley continues to select him in squads. Feelings are strong amongst journos and supporters that EJ does not deserve to be there but the boss defended his selection and expressed his pleasure that he is now at Cardiff City.

Unfortunately, that pleasure appears to be based on his belief that Johnson will get regular football but he already looks nailed on for a place on the bench and is clearly going to have to work very hard and improve to get regular first team action.
Looks like our first impressions of him in a Cardiff City shirt - admittedly at a time where he is badly short of match fitness having not really started a game for 6 months - is little different to USA fans who have followed his career. That's a worry!

SMERTIN - THANKS BUT NO THANKS TO CITY & THE CHAMPIONSHIP

Alexei Smertin, who turned down a season's loan move to Cardiff City earlier this week, spoke to today's South Wales Echo giving his reasons.

In the article - link below - The Russian claimed;
- He only found out of the likely move on the day itself.
- He had no contact from either Fulham or Cardiff about it and learned about the deal being arranged via friends and then locak media.
- He simply was not interested in Championship football.

Smertin had his contract cancelled by mutual consent with The Londoners later same day and is now expected to return to Russia to see out his career.

The loan window opens on Monday and Cardiff City expect to be active in it ... which, on current form, means they will probably do nothing!

FITNESS BOOST FOR WALES AND TOSH

With so many key players absent at present, Wales had a timely boost ahead of their opening World Cup qualification game against Azerbaijan at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium tomorrow as Rob Earnshaw and Jason Koumas both declared themselves fit to play.
Earnie was expected to miss the game but has responded well to week-long treatment while JK's slight knock is not significant.
With poor weather and poor advance ticket sales, it promises to be an echoey afternoon in the stadium which is certain to have its roof closed. Only 8,000 tickets were sold at the start of the week and, at the very best, just 15,000 may show up tomorrow. However it's a vital game as Wales need a confidence boosting win ahead of next week's tough trip to Russia.
C'MON CYMRU!

TRUST IN US

CARDIFF CITY SUPPORTERS TRUST launched in spectacular style tonight with more than 300 fans turning up at the Electricity Club in Pontcanna on a rotten night, more than 200 of them signing up 'on the spot' for membership, the rest taking forms away or joining on-line.

The Trust has objectives to engage with the Club, consult with them on fan matters, represent the club in the community and the ultimate aim of holding sufficient shares to have an influence, or even representation, in the Boardroom.

It was a fantastic effort by Corky (Acting Chairman) and everyone who put last night together and for their your work and dedication for several months to get to that stage. Last night was fitting testimony to their efforts and the passion of our fans for our club.

The F.A. Cup was on display for supporters to have their photo taken, there were several stands selling souvenirs, supporters club, supporters direct, football against racism and more and club mascot Bartley Bluebird was present in a new outfit.

The serious part of the evening was a presentation on the trust and aims by key Supporters Trust delegates from London and a couple talking about Cardiff City and how it works before the 'legends' Phil "Joe" Dwyer, Jason "Psycho" Perry and Andy Legg Legg Legg signed as the first three honorary members with the Trust's three membership schemes named after them.

FULL DETAILS OF THE TRUST, ITS AIMS AND MEMBERSHIP DETAILS ARE HERE:
http://www.ccfctrust.org

The second half of the evening was a Q&A brilliantly hosted by BBC Wales Rob Phillips with the legends and also ex-ref Keith Cooper, Media Wales' banned City reporter Steve Tucker and Kevin Rye of Supporters Direct which was hugely enjoyable, funny at times and also heated at others with questions about safe standing, hardest footballers, the perceived 'media bias' towards egg chasing, the game today and matters at Cardiff City.

I look forward to seeing the Trust go from strength to strength, I'll be signing up and assigning my small number of club shares over to it ... every little helps.

LEDLEY - MY HEAD'S IN A SPIN

You Spin Me Right Round
Baby Right Round

CARDIFF CITY star and local boy JOE LEDLEY has broken his silence on remaining with The Bluebirds after Dave Jones and Peter Ridsdale apparently denied him the opportunity to talk to Premiership newbies Stock City or accept their increasing bids rising to what would have been a club record £6M. The Deadly Duo claiming City are on a Premiership push this season - they seem more believing of that than most fans - and that Stoke is not the best club for Joe.

I fully appreciate Joe's feelings and dilemma. His profile with Cardiff City is unlikely to get any higher than it is now.

He may only be 21 as Dave Jones wants to remind him but he's not any 21 yr old. He's closing in on 200 Cardiff City appearances and he's got 20 caps for Wales. For club and country, he's one of the very first names on the team sheet. He's also seen kids come through the Academy system long after him and get Premiership clubs.

And as a City fan - as well as player - even he will know deep down that there's a world of difference between Ridsdale and Jones talking up the Premiership with City and the reality in which we've sold out best players (yet again), replaced them with lesser talents and have barely shown the ambition talked about.

I questionned at the start of the week whether City's decision not to sell was about Joe and the teams interests or Ridsdale more worried about losing his credibility even more than he already has. I still feel that way.

Maybe I'd feel different if I felt we were hell bent on keeping Joe but we're not. I know it's only a matter of time before we do that anyway (and it could be as soon as January) and that the player himself knows deep down it's time for pushing on ... and after 5 years service to this club when all we've given him back is teams to produce mid-table obscurity, who can deny feeling like that?

Although, I have to say, when the time comes I hope he gets a better club than Stoke City ... I do feel Dave Jones makes a valid point about going there.

SWANSEA CARLING CUP ALLOCATION CONFIRMED

Cardiff City have been allowed a low number of supporters - just 1,426 - to visit Swansea City's Liberty Stadium on Tuesday September 23rd for the Carling Cup 3rd round tie which will also be televised live on Sky tv.

This trip will a 'bubble' (coach only and under escort). Cardiff City have confirmed all Ambassadors who have attended one or more away game this season, that includes me, is guaranteed a ticket with this allocation. Details of costs and times to be confirmed.

The only question now is - do I really want to go through all the hassle that will undoubtedly surround it which I can watch it hassle-free on the box. Don't ask me why my thinking is probably YES!

SAK NOT SACKED ... OUT ON LOAN TO COUNTY

Teenage third choice Cardiff City Polish goalkeeper Erwin Sak is joining Newport County on an initial one month loan deal.

The Blue Square Conference South side have had a poor start to the season and conceded 13 goals in their opening 4 games before arresting their slide with a 1-0 victory over Hampton & Richmond but it came at a cost as first choice keeper Glyn Thompson was injured.

Sak is expected is take over and, if so, would get an instant baptism with "Cewnty" home to one of last season's F.A. Cup giantkillers in Havant & Waterlooville tomorrow night (Weds) and then away on Friday in Maidenhead.

LEDLEY "WE WILL GET YOU TO THE PREMIERSHIP" AND ECHO WRAP

Today's South Wales Echo story about Joe - and Roger Johnson - staying with City and an audio interview with The Echo's Terry Phillips about the host of transfer window stories of what did - and mostly didn't - happen.

PULIS DISAPPOINTED NOT TO GET LEDLEY

Tony Pulis, talking to the Stoke Sentinel newspaper, expressed his frustration at bing unable to get Joe Ledley from Cardiff City - his key target in the transfer window - despite trying to make Joe the SIX MILLION POUND MAN, a figure that would have been a club record for a Stoke purchase and Cardiff sale.

Talking about Ridsdale's refusal to let 21 year old Joe go at this time, Pulis said, "I am disappointed because I think Joe is a very good player, but we have to respect Cardiff. He is their player and maybe it was never going to happen."

WALES' STRIKING PROBLEMS

Just what Toshack, and Wales fans, didn't want. Already facing kicking off a World Cup campaign with a depleted squad minust the likes the Gabbidon and Collins, John Toshack is now faced with losing key strikers as well ahead of this weekend's home clash with Azerbaijan and next week's visit to Russia.

Craig Bellamy only returned from his latest lengthy injury last weekend and is not ready for international football, Tosh had to concede that. However his problems have been compounded by Freedie Eastwood and Rob Earnshaw being injured too.

Eastwood is definitely out for the double header while Earnie is currently being treated at Nottingham Forest. He is set to be absent this weekend but shoudl be ok for Russia. He will leave him turnign to kids and, in particular, maybe it's time for Ched Evans - a player who may also consider going on loan now that Man City have mega riches and already pushed him further down the order with yesterday's stunnign capture of Robinho.

THE AFTERMATH OF THE TRANSFER WINDOW "DRAMA"

So it's now firmly shut and the dust is settling and what have Cardiff City achieved?

1. Sold Glenn Loovens for somewhere between £2.5M to £3M, have Ridders pledge to spend the money on replacements and we get Gabor Gypes for £200,000.

2. Sold Thommo for a small undisclosed (why?) fee to get Eddie Johnson on loan with Fulham paying the bulk of his wages.

3 Fail to get cover for the injured Gavin Rae and Riccy Scimeca while injured and now have to try again with the loan window opens in a week or so.

4. Sell players for the combined value of £10.5M in 2008 (plus the extra millions from the F.A. Cup run and record season ticket sales) and spend just £625k on replacements with the aim of a Premiership drive.

It really doesn't look good where the basic facts are laid bare.

CITY TRIED TO GET RAMSEY BACK ON LOAN

According to this morning's Independent, Cardiff City contacted Arsenal close to the end of the transfer window with an audacious bid to bring back Aaron Ramsey on loan but found themselves knocked back.

This is my shirt ... ... and I'm keeping it!

It would have been great but it always seemed destined to failure given that Ramsey turned down Manchester United over the summer to a large extent because they wished to loan him back to City for the season.

It does however beg the question did City go for Ramsey as an option after Smertin turned them down or was it becuase, despite Ridsdale's public bravado, that they would have sold Ledley to Stoke had they secured a viable replacement??

BBC website also suggest Ledley wanted to go

BBC are now carrying a story on Cardiff City declining Stoke's offer of £6M for Joe Ledley but the quotes suggest Ridsdale stopped it despite knowing the player expressed some interest.

It's a no win situation. I'm glad Joe stayed and hope he'll get his head down - I'm sure he will - but he must be unhappy and disgruntled to be blocked.

00:10 JOE STAYS BUT IS THAT WHAT HE REALLY WANTED?

The transfer window is now closed and it is confirmed that having declined bids rising from £5M to £6M, Joe Ledley will remain a Bluebird.

However, news emerges of a sub-plot in which Joe indicated that he did wish to move but was told by the club that they wouldn't sell. Sources behind this cannot be revealed but are reliable. (In fact, Sky Sports News have also indicated they're aware Joe wanted to move too).

On the one hand, well done to City to holding onto their asset but will it be at the expense of a disgruntled player on the other who, without question, wants to play in the Premiership and it's where his talents should be.

The other point, rather overlooked on a dramatic day, is that City - in my view - haven't adequately equipped themselves to kick on. We have spent just £625K of the £8M received for Ramsey and Loovens and gambled on those cheap, loan on free signings brought to the club. I remain disappointed overall with how things have gone since the F.A. Cup Final and the windfalls which really should have helped City kick on with far more ambition than they have.

23:40 and JOE'S FUTURE STILL IN THE BALANCE

Just 20 minutes until the transfer window shuts and Sky Sports are suggesting City have also turned down Stoke's £6M offer but hint that the Potters may still not be finished and may launch one frantic final attempt.

This is crazy.

10:30pm TRANSFER WINDOW UPDATE - STOKE MAKE NEW LEDLEY BID AT £6M

While the rest of football concentrates and marvels at Manchester City, under new owners, looking set to rob Robinho off Chleski for a whopping £32.5M and Berbatov looking set to go to Man United for a similar figure, my only worry - realising that City intend signing nobody as they had no Plan B after Smertin - is whether Cardiff City will now say no to Stoke City over Our Joe.

The Potters, it is being reported, have upped their weekend bid of £5M to £5.5M earlier today and now offered a cool £6M this evening.

Peter Ridsdale has vowed to sell nobody else in this transfer window but that's a mighty fee. However let's hope not as I don't think it's the right move at all for Joe while City just wouldn't be able to replace and I'm fed up of us selling with the money going into a black hole and insufficiently reinvested in the team.

We wait with baited breath.

10PM TRANSFER WINDOW UPDATE: SMERTIN CONTRACT CANCELLED BY FULHAM

He started the day set to sign a season long contract for Cardiff City from Fulham and ends it with no club at all as the failure to accept that deal saw the Londoners and Alexei Smertin mutually agree to cancel his contract with immediate effect.

The news is of little consequence to City but Smertin and his girlie hair will be happy with his contract paid up and able to seek a new club outside the transfer window with which to negotiate his own contract and terms.

7PM TRANSFER WINDOW UPDATE - THOMMO JOINS BURNLEY

STEVE THOMPSON, the scorer of Cardiff City's only Championship winning goal so far this season, has tonight joined Burnley on a 2 year deal for a small undisclosed fee.

The player has been on the transfer list for over a year, a City cult hero and a 100%'er but never really got the goals. He holds the ball well, loves to run the channels and, on song, has a sublime touch but was never the strongest header of the ball and the out and out target man that his physique would suggest. Amazingly, he seemed to love scoring only against Plymouth, Southampton and Burnley, his City debut came with two goals against them and he scored home and away against them last season .. maybe it's those goals against The Clarets that helped seal the deal.

The Man took on Peter Thorne's "Magic Hat" - wonder who'll get it now? - and confirmed his cult status by penning a Do The Ayatollah Oasis-style F.A. Cup Final song. With new striker additions, Thommo was effectively 5th choice although he got a few minutes at Sheffield United last weekend to sign off. The move has been touted for several days so was no surprise to anyone.

Good Luck Thommo.

JACKS vs CITY in CARLING CUP - Chosen as live SKY game

Despite a couple of all Premiership ties and some other attractive draws, The Bluebirds third round clash at Swansea is Sky's choice for the live fixture.

Save a FAW Premier Cup tie in 2002, it will be the first meeting between the clubs for 9 years, the first clash at Swansea's Liberty Stadium and will inevitably have a full house ad red hot atmosphere.

Cardiff fans already know it will be a 'bubble' coach only trip but details of allocation of how to get your hands on the Golden Ticket are stiill to be confirmed.

The game will take place in 3 weeks on Tuesday August 23rd with a 7:45pm kick-off.

5PM TRANSFER WINDOW UPDATE - DEAL OFF, SMERTIN NOT RUSSIAN TO CITY!

CARDIFF CITY's proposed deal to bring midfielder and former Russia skipper Alexei Smertin to the club on a season's loan with a deal agreed with Fulham who were also willing to paty the bulk of his wages has fallen through.
Not becuase of work permit issues but because this blog understands the player himself wasn't keen to come to Ninian Park.
It leaves City in desparate need of a midfielder but they may now have to wait until the Premiership loan window opens in a week to try their luck elsehwere.

LEDLEY UPDATE - NEW STOKE BID WAS £5.5M

But still declined by the club and also Joe Ledley was believed to be not keen to leave ... especially for Stoke!

Peter Ridsdale has also emphaised that neither Ledley or Johnson are for sale ... he'll wait until next summer for that!!!

4PM TRANSFER WINDOW UPDATE - IT'S NO GO FOR JOE WITH £5M BID REFUSED

Transfer Deadline Day hots up as Stoke City table an official £5M bid for City midfielder and star JOE LEDLEY.

As this was the same figure that City reportedly turned down for the player last week, it seemed unlikely to succeed but there was a period of anxiety as Sky Sports News splashed details of the bid. However within 20 minutes came confirmation that Cardiff had declined it.

No news yet on whether Stoke will increase their bid, Smertin's work permit, anyone else joining or anyone, particularly Thommo, leaving.

The window remains open until 11pm and there are suspicions of frantic last minute activity but hopefully not at Cardiff unless it means arrivals although Smertins seems to be the only one planned at present.

SMART CITY IN FOR SMERTIN

Cardiff City are on the verge of bringing the 33 yr old 52 times capped Russian international ALEXEI SMERTIN to Ninian Park. The deal is agreed and it all depends on City gaining a work permit at the Home Office this afternoon. Dave Jones is in London today hoping to sort that and, if done, Smertin will join his fellow Fulham team-mate Eddie Johnson on a season's loan at Ninian Park.

SMERTIN - A Bluebird by tonight?

City need an urgent addition in midfield having failed to replace Aaron Ramsey while both Gavin Rae and Riccy Scimeca are set to be absent for several more weeks.

It's the final day of the transfer window and there have been unsubstantiated reports that Dave Jones was in Scotland yesterday maybe trying to get another striker while Steve Thompson seems set to move to a Championship rival with Burnley reported to be in the hot seat.

More on this as the day develops.
