Nottingham Forest Chief Exec defends persual of Whitingham

Nottingham Forest, so close to Premier League promotion, last season are a club under fire from within for failing to build on that this term.

A poor start with 3 points from 4 games, a failure to do any transfer business in the window and a manager apparently at loggerheads with the Board has produced a lot of anger from their fans.

It is, however, their public chasing of Cardiff City's Peter Whittingham and Swansea City's Darren Pratley that has caused them most trouble with Forest Chief Exec going onto BBC Radio claiming both men wanted to join his club but were being prevented from doing so.

Both South Wales clubs declined all offers and claim both players would prefer with their current clubs making formal complaints and expressing their anger over an approach that many felt tantamount to "tapping up".

Mark Arthur was forced to make a full and unreserved apology and, now, for the first time has talked about it as the criticism from his own fans refuses to go away. Rather lamely, he says both clubs decided to keep the players despite them being in the final year of their contracts and he has to respect that, the same as they held onto players in a similar situation.

The full interview with the deluded fool can be seen here:

Forest apologise to Cardiff and Swansea

Nottingham Forest Chief Executive has said sorry to key figures at Cardiff City and Swansea City after giving a media interview that incensed both clubs after claiming that he knew Swans midfielder Darren Pratley and Bluebirds star Peter Whittingham wanted to join his club.

Both players denied this and the club were calling for a Football League investigation on tapping up players, Cardiff’s Dave Jones calling it a blatant attempt to unsettle his staff while CEO Gethin Jenkins told Arthurs to concentrate on his own club, not other.

Forest made two bids for Whittingham, neither anywhere near City’s valuation and it is believed the player will be happy to discuss a new Cardiff contract now that City are resolving their summer cash woes and strengthening the squad.

However there was a late twist in the tale as Pratley and Swansea announced that they had failed to agree contract terms and do not have plans to discuss again soon. This may yet open the door to Forest.

Championship 2010/2011 - a throwback to yesteryear?

The Sarf Lan-danners of Millwall won today's League One play-off final at Wembley beating Swindon 1-0, recovering for their play-off final defeat 12 months ago, to become the 24th team in next season's Championship.

It has a distinctly nostalgic feel about it - not necessarily in a good way -with Cardiff City, Leeds United, Millwall, Portsmouth, Swansea City and Bristol City all in the same division.

The 'look' last time all these clubs were on equal terms

A real throwback to the 1970's and, no doubt, media will be quick to pick on on the potential for problems. In fact. I've already heard 1 national radio station discussing exactly that.

Swansea City mourn as striker passes away

Very sad to hear that Swansea's young Austrian striker Besian Idrizaj, aged 22, died of a suspected heart attack in his sleep at his parent's house last night, which is shocking.

The player arrived ijn this country as a Liverpool signing and scored a hat-trick for them at Wrexham but his stay was brief and it was at other clubs too until Swansea took him on a 2 year deal which still had a year to run.

Idrizaj, who made just 3 appearences this term, is believed to have collapsed on the pitch on a couple of previous occasions.

Thoughts and condolences go to his family, friends and Swans fans who knew him.

Swansea - the myth they're a great footballing team

Swansea City lie 5th and should be congratulated for that but it does come at the expense of game after game of low scores. They've scored the least and conceded the least ... both by a fair margin over the rest of the Championship.

While Cardiff are 3rd for goals scored in the Championship this season (they've netted 67 so far) and 2nd for the total games in the league games (116 in 40 matches to date), Swansea are bottom by miles.

33 goals scored is pitiful and 6 fewer than any other side (but, of course, 3 of them came against Cardiff at Liberty) and their aggregate of 64 is an incredible 23 goals fewer than the next lowest tally.

And yet pundits still roll out the myth how good their football is and how lovely they are to watch. You couldn't make it up!

FrIendly International: WALES 0 SWEDEN 1

A tepid Wales tasted home defeat in their first international of the year and build up to the Euro-2012 campaign starting in September aginst Sweden at Swansea City's Liberty Stadium.

Wales build up was hampered by the horrific injury suffered by Aaron Ramsey last weekend and overshadowed by manager John Toshack not selecting his previous Captain and in-form Craig Bellamy with reasons undisclosed so far. In his absence, former Cardiff City man James Collins was given the captain armband.

It meant another young side and, as usual, a dijointed friendly as the meximum of 6 second half subs were introduced.

Wales: Myhill (Hennessey 46), Gunter, Williams, Collins, Morgan, Bale (Nyatanga 67), Collison (Crofts 71), Davies (Cotterill 64), Vaughan, Evans (Earnshaw 46), Church (Vokes 53).
Subs Not Used: Eardley, Dorman, King.

In front of 8,256 fans, Wales started strongly winning corners with Ched Evans having a shot put behind and Collins seeing a header swept off the line but the visiotrs settled and were denied a rightful lead midway through the half as Toivenon had a goal ruled out for offside when he looked clearly onside, tv repleays confirmed that. Larsson of Birmingham missed by a fraction with a 30 yard free-kick.

However it mattered little as Bolton Wanderers Johan Elmander netted on half-time having a 25 yarder pushed around the post and firing into the top corner from just inside the box as the resulting corner fell his way.

The second half was poor watching and resembled a training session for long periods as it lacked all tempo and urgency, the succession of changes not helping. Both sides went close but the Swedes proved good value for their win. Wales will know they must do much better.

Bothroyd tells Swans, "Jack Off"

I was ready to ignore yesterday's story of Swansea City making an 'audacious' bid for Jay Bothroyd as it is the silly season, mischief making and there was no story.

Swans chairman Huw Jenkins is supposed to have enquired with City boss Dave Jones but realising he didn't have the funds to make a reasonable bid, didn't offer. However he seemed keen to let the press know about it which had Swansea fans gloating.

However in a classic response, Jay Bothroyd told the Cardiff City official website that he was 'embarrassed' by the story and Swansea's interest adding' "You can kill that story off - I won't be going there. It's embarrassing, I'm happy at Cardiff".

That has to be the only bit of sense in the whole comedic episode.

Have Cardiff City Finally Learned a Lesson?

Has the penny finally dropped at Cardiff City?

We all love flair and quality (especially Chris Burke’s recent herculean efforts) but good sides have to show far more than that. Therefore, it was fantastic to watch City only allow Middlesbrough to play in front of them on Sunday and defend as if their lives depended on winning every challenge and being there first for every loose ball too. And it was the same story at West Brom and against Preston in the past week. Each time, it was also with the added disruption of losing key players both before and during those games as well.

Is this really the same group of players who did anything but that in those awful defeats and performances at Swansea and at home to Ipswich and tossed away the play-offs at the end of last season? After those 4 successive defeats in Novmeber, at least one Cardiff City player admitted to some complacency amongst the squad which is pretty damning. Manager Dave Jones is now demanding more of the same rmeinding his men that they have now set the standard.

While I am sure City will continue to have inconsistencies – just like the rest of the Championship – if they show that spirit, standard and tenacity for the rest of the season, it may yet bring a most fantastic reward.

Congratulations to the Cardiff City management and squad … now keep on doing it.

Cardiff now 7th after their non-playing Saturday

With City preparing for the visit of Ipswich to South Wales tomorrow - the game moved back a day so it didn't clash with Wales egg chasers getting booed and outclassed at home to the Aussies, bless'em - fans were left to wonder how destructive Saturday results would be. The answer is, they weren't bad at all.

On the downside, Cardiff now find themelves outside the play-off spots as QPR and Nottingham Forest overtook Cardiff in the table while Newcastle and West Brom in the automatic spots are currently threatening to run away with those places.

However it could have been much worse. A draw tomorrow will return City to 5th (and back above Swansea albeit on goal difference, a win will bring up 30 points and see Cardiff in 4th spot).

Leaders Newcastle made mince meat of The Swans beating them 3-0 with all the goals coming in the opening 25 minutes before they declared. West Brom in 2nd went goal crazy winning 4-0 at Sheffield Wednesday (Current on loan Bluebird Warren Feeney was a non-playing sub for The Owls while skipper and former City man Darren Purse is out of their squad). Leicester who started and finished the day in third will have been disappointed to have been held 1-1 at Scunthrope, the home equaklising in added time.

Although QPR leap-frogged Cardiff, they won't have been plased to have been held 2-2 at home by Coventry but Nottingham Forest, now 4th, pummelled Doncaster 4-1 at home.

McPhail overwhelmed by public support

Steven McPhail took time out today to thank the public, Cardiff City and all football fans for the incredible support he has received since it was confirmed last Friday that he was fighting cancer.

The good news is that his lymphona was discovered early and he should make a full and fast receovery but it is very rare in men and even rarer in young men. So it was a complete shock.

However Macca is very positive and put this on record.

"I've been overwhelmed by all the texts, e-mails and other messages of support. Please thank everyone on behalf of me and my family.

"My treatment starts next week and I can't wait to crack on with it and get back to playing next year. The messages have been a great help. Cardiff City fans have been at the forefront, but people have been in touch from all over the world.

"People who have had a similar condition to mine have been in touch to tell me about their experiences, and that's been a great help.I've even had people come up to me on the street to wish me all the best. I can hardly believe how good people have been to me.

"I've even had a few goodwill messages from Swansea fans."

Good Luck Steve McPhail.

Two Out as Feeney and Capaldi go out on loan

CARDIFF CITY failed to bring in any player with the transfer loan window shutting firmly today but did get two players off the wage bill for a short time as Warren Feeney and Tony Capaldi both players succeeded in their wish to get away for football and headed to Yorkshire on short-term loan deals.

Tony Capaldi had been linked with a move to League One leaders Leeds United most of this week and that was confirmed late this afternoon.

He has fallen down the pecking order to third choice left back but still managed 9 appearences, his last coming in midfield during the awful 3-2 at Swansea almost 3 weeks ago.

TC is with Leeds until January 4th, there is already talk of a permanent deal, which has been underlined by the fact that Cardiff have allowed him to play for Leeds in F.A. Cup action. Leeds are away at Kettering in Round 2 this weekend.

The blog has covered several times that Warren Feeney has never figured at Cardiff. Despite doing well on the international stage, it appears that he cannot quite cut it at this level.

It was therefore a mild surprise to see fellow Championship side Sheffield Wednesday take him on loan, initially until December 28th. It was just as big a surprise to see him come off the bench for City in the Bransley defeat last Saturday

With Cardiff having no reserve side and both players not generally featuring in the meagre first team sqaud unless a couple go missing, it's in their interests to get out. Good Luck to them both.

It is disappointing that City did not bring in any replacements but the HMRC court order may prohibit that anyway. Peter Ridsdale has promised exciting times ahead with his belief that the Malaysian takeover will see the club active int eh January window ... the question is ... can our current squad, small on numbers and with injuries, keep us in contention until that stage??

Jacks pass Bluebirds with Friday night win

Swansea City beat Derby County 1-0 at Liberty Stadium this evening with a late but reportedly deserved winner to jump over Cardiff City into 3rd spot of the Championship, their highest league placing for 26 years.

Cardiff City get their show back on the road after THAT defeat at Swansea a fortnight ago with a tricky trip to Barnsley tomorrow but are boosted by the return of the Championship's joint leading scorers Peter Whittingham and Michael Chopra who missed that game due to injury and suspension respectively. Kevin McNaughton should belatedly start his season which is timely as Adam Matthews is definitely out after a midweek foot injury with Wales Under 21's.

C'MON CITY.

1. Newcastle P 16 PTS 33
2. West Brom P 16 PTS 31
3. Swansea P 17 PTS 28
4. CARDIFF P 16 PTS 27
5. QPR P 16 PTS 27
6. Blackpool P 16 PTS 27
7. Leicester P 16 PTS 27

Feeney to flee on a free

Feeney has had more games for Swansea
than Cardiff in 3 years as a Bluebird!

CARDIFF CITY striker Warren Feeney has joined Tony Capaldi in publicly declaring he wants away from Cardiff City in the January transfer window. With few exceptions and without malice, most supporters hope they leave as well as they are surplus to requirements, a fair cost on the playing budget and it may enable frsh faces for the second half of the season.

Feeney is a trier but despite his international successes with Northern Ireland, he has never looked a Championship standard striker managing just 5 starts and 7 subs outings in over 2 and a half years with The Bluebirds. City followers have always been bewildered why he was brought to the club on a lucrative 3.5 year deal which expires next summer, those fears have been proven. Always overshadowed completely by other strikers at the club, he has also been affected by injuries.

It was ironic that his only successful times since joining the club has been loan periods elsewhere. However a permanent move to Swansea City after loan success was scuppered by injury, last season at Dundee United was curtailed by more injury and a possible permanent summer to Leeds United failed for the same reason. Now fit again, Feeney has managed one fleeting outing off the bench this term.

Talking to Irish press at the weekend, the likeable Feeney said, “The window is coming up in January and we'll see what happens there and take things on in the New Year. I want to get out there and I need to get playing to feel good about myself again. I've another six weeks to go and then I'll be looking to get something sorted out. The move to Leeds fell through because of the problem with the hip but that's sorted now … … I'm not one who is going to sit there and pick up the money, I wouldn't do that because I want to play."

So how much did your Jack mates take the p*** out of you??

Swansea City fans have the bragging rights after deservedly beating Cardiff on the weekend and I know they're making the most of it!

I've had calls, text and e-mails all weekend and as several Swans fans work with me, I expected more back at work today. As you'll see below, they duly obliged ... my desk was worse than this earlier in the day.

Swansea City 3 Cardiff City 2 oops, we bottled it again

Agony, angst and anger - they're my feelings as Cardiff City lost out to our South Wales rivals in a five goal cracker of a match served up nationwide on Sky tv in a match of high drama and contrasting emotions but, in the final outcome, the right result becuase Swansea showed they wanted it more ... boy, does that hurt to admit.

I'm too gutted to write much so here's a summary.

TEAM NEWS:

CARDIFF CITY were minus the Championship's joint leading scorers who have netted 12 goals each so far. Michael Chopra served a 1 game ban for 5 yellow cards but it was a shock to lose Peter Whittingham too with an ankle injury. A third key absentee was playmaker Steve McPhail who is facing a likely op for a thigh injury and could be out until Xmas/New Year. City could call on Ross McCormack to replace Chopra, Gavin Rae replaced McPhail but Tony Capaldi to cover for Whittingham FFS???

CCFC: Marshall; Matthews-Gerrard-Hudson-Kennedy; Capaldi-Ledley-Rae-Burke; Bothroyd-McCormack. Subs: Enckleman, Gypes, Quinn, Comminges, Taiwo, Scimeca, Feeney

On a day Cardiff ended a 6 match unbeaten run, SWANSEA CITY extended theirs to almost 2 months and 10 games. The Championship's meanest defence also tried their best to level City's absence of 24 goal strikers by losing skipper and centre half Gary Monk who injured himself in the warm-up. Why couldn't it have been more than him?

On a day when Cardiff's personnel suggested they may have been better lining up 4=5-1 than the standard 4-4-2, The Jacks did just that.

SCFC:De Vries; Bessone-Williams-Tait-Rangel; Britton-Pratley-Van der Gun-Dyer-Allen; Beattie.

THE MATCH

Heavy rain overnight and on the day gave way to a fairly sunny afternoon, the atmosphere was, as always, immense with Cardiff's 1,800 permitted fans who was bussed in and out competing well with The Jacks' 1,600 in a sell out crowd of 18.209.

The first couple of minutes saw City in the Swansa half but they were soon in trouble, largely of the self-inflicted variety. A let off came in the third minute as a Dyer pass in field was cleverly flicked on and Beattie wes in o0n goal with City's centre halves further apart than Jordan's legs but David Marshall produced a smart save charging out.

Cardiff didn't learn, Dyer was beating Kennedy for fun, midfielders and defenders neaither closed down play or cut out crosses and they were getting caught on the wrong side of players. Yet again, Cardiff were started too slowly with Swansea passing nicely and also winning, at ease, every second ball and loose ball too.

However the mention in which City fell two behind was horrific.

9 minutes, Swansea won a free-kick near the corner which was a poor decision but Xardiff's covering was inexcsuable. Marshall slipped to the floor coming out, a powederpuff header was nodded across goal by Beattie who was in front of Gerrard (how?) and there was DYER, the smallest man on the pitch, jumping and put home a simple header with Adam Matthews next to him not reacting at all.

16 minutes, Rae caught out, Matthews caught out, a Bessone cross found Beattie on the inside of Kennedy and his flick down was turned home by PRATLEY on the spin with Marshall static.

Cardiff were now shell=shocked and ragged, Swans fans naturally loving it and then the most amazing turnaround.

32 minutes - Chris Burke gets the ball halfway, looks up and spots BOTHROYD who slipped Williams, chested down and stabbed home in classic style.

34 minutes - just 2 minutes 18 seconds later, City win a free-kick wide, McCormack whipped it to the far post where HUDSON ghosted in and steered a header off the near post at the sharpest of angles.

At this point, I went from desapir and numbness to standing, bouncing, screaming and extreme hysteria.

All of a sudden, Cardiff were winning ball and looking the more positive. No further drama til half-time apart from one or two instances of posturing but from nowhere, the momentum was with with Cardiff in a real thriller.

They carried it into the second period and looked the more likely to win until another dramatic 2 minutes changed and finalised the destiny of the contest.

City had a free-kiock 25 yards out and you could immediately sense McCormack fancied it and was sizing it up. His execution was perfection and he was so unlucky to see the ball dip brilliantly, De Vries beaten all ends up but watching the ball cannon off his crossbar. Just 6 inches lower ...

From that, Swansea went up field and Bessone - the late call up for Monk - sent in his second assist of the afternoon but the questions this time were all for Joe Ledley who let PRATLEY go leaving the midfielder to score his second of the game. The last time he had scored for Swansea was against us last season.

This time, there was no way back for Cardiff. We never looked like conceding again but never looked like levelling either. Swans used all three subs and Dave Jones, just to compound his tactics, made a ridiculous subsitition choice removing Capaldi (fair enough) but putting central midfielder Taiwo out wide. The player looked lost and was embarrassing but a more sane manager would have put Ledley there and used Scimeca's experience in the middle allowing that to happen.

Cardiff fans were hurt and felt humilated, Swansea will love the bragging rights.

After watching Cardiff concede 6 goals in less than 2 hours in the last 2 aways - half of them due to comedy defending - it's time to look at change. Matthews did well after his horrendous ball-watching error the the opener and Hudson performed well too, it's rare for me to acknowledge that. Gerrard was disappointing though but Kennedy was poor. Hopefully Kevin McNuaghton will be ready next time at Barnsley.

Rae and Ledley both had poor games and have to do much better than this while it will be a blessed relief to have Chops and Whitts back in the fold.

However City must examine why their attitude didn't seem as good are as focussed as Swansea's.

Dare I suggest the contrasting post-match emotions of Swansea's Sousa and Dave Jones tells it own story?

Sousa -"It means a lot to all of us and is not just special for us but the fans and the city, there is a lot of happiness here. We can be proud with ourselves, fans can go to work with more energy and to help the city to grow."

Jones - "I'm disappointed to lose but I'm no more disappointed because it is a derby game, it's just the bragging rights go to them."

Veyr helpful Dave, thanks ... not sure what for but thanks!

Cardiff City Dave Jones boss is in the running for Manger of the Month and so is his Swansea counterpart Paolo Sousa with the winner announced before they go head-to-head on Saturday.

Maybe Jones and City will be hoping someone else wins it however as DJ won the awaerd early season and it porved to be a posioned challice with City having an awful following month.

McCormack warms up for Jackland

CARDIFF CITY held a 'closed doors' friendly against Exeter City at the new stadium today and emerged 2-0 winners.

It was essentially a run out for the sub's bench but key interest was in Ross McCormack who is certain to replace the suspended Michael Chopra at Swansea this weekend and he stood out scoring the opener with a stunner free-kick. Tony Capaldi doubled City's lead before the interval and a goalless second half saw McCormack withdrawn on the hour. The encounter also saw Kevin McNaughton get a more than useful run out as he bids to get into first team contention having missed the entire season to date.

Talking to CardiffCityFC.co.uk, McCormack said, "I was always going to play some part today, I would have been happy to go on for 90 minutes, but the decision was made to take me off, and I was happy to go along with it. I'll train Thursday and Friday to make sure I'm ready for Swansea".

City's side: Enckelman; Quinn-Morris-Gyepes-McNaughton, Comminges-Taiwo-Scimeca- Capaldi; McCormack-Feeney.

Michael Chopra regrets

A strange location for an interview – a Texaco garage where Chops was helping promote a new green fuel – but City’s striking hero looks back on yesterday game and expresses his disappointment at missing out on Swansea this weekend.
