Working in Newport, I popped along to the city centre’s new(ish) Riverfront Theatre to see The Joe Strummer photo exhibition which is there for the month to coincide with the stage play of “Meeting Joe Strummer” and screening of the new Julian Temple movie, “The Future Is Unwritten”.
I wasn’t sure what to expect but knowing Joe had major connections with Newport and a lifetime#’s worth of work, I thought it would be a large display and collection on view. Instead, after navigating what is the nightmare of getting around major renovation of the roads and area around the theatre which is currently fenced, it was a disappointing experience.
Situated in the theatre's art gallery - probably smaller than a large house living room - the collection consisted of no more than 30 photos including some being duplicated in both walls and a few being no more than blown up Clash album covers. No pictures of Joe around Newport either but, in fairness, the photographer only seems to have known in his later years but there were a couple from Monmouth.
All in black and white, while I'm not arts lover, some could be appreciated as Joe was a photogenic man in his looks and appearance and he has a legacy.
Not the greatest experience but still better than the usual;sandwich and newspaper lunchtime stroll around Asda!
