Could Sheffield Wednesday 3/5/2009 be a repeat of Darlington 3/5/1997?

I was amazed to realise City's first ever time into the play-offs was 12 years today - it didn't feel that long ago - as we attempt we make play-off finals for the 4th time in club history. Let's hope that they repeat the feat but with more style and less heart-stopping moments than that day at Feethams on this day in 1997.

The circumstances then were identical to now. Cardiff needed a point to guarantee their place but any slip up as other sides - notably Lincoln City - could take their spot with a victory. Cardiff were away and Lincoln were home - same with today's set up with Preston and Burnley at home while we away.

It was a killer that day and the last 15 minutes were mental. Cardiff played well but fell behind as the second half started. Chasing the game, Carl Dale equalised and we were in ecstasy but Darlo scored again straight from the kick-off and there was no way back into the game for City.

Pig-sick by that, news then came through on radios as we fell behind that Rochdale - as useless as usual that season - somehow pulled off a shock 2-0 win at Lincoln and had just scored their clinching second goal as City fell behind again but Lincoln fluffed their opportnity went it was there for the taking.

Picture the scene as City fans like myself went nuts as we scored, were sickened as we fell behind again then celebrating madly as we heard the Lincoln score, down as we lost then celebrating wildly as we still made the play-offs. A truly bizarre afternoon oop north.

It was only a temporary reprieve though - we lost in the play-off semis to Northampton.

City's side, that day, makes me realise how long ago it was though.

Cardiff: Williams , Lloyd-Jarman-Young-Perry; Fowler-Partridge-Stoker-Middleton; Dale-Haworth. Subs: White-Philliskirk-Eckhardt.

Just do it today boys!!!
