Robbie Fowler Fatter Than Pauline Fowler

Blobby Fowler

For all those of us who continually pointed out he carried almost as many pounds on his body in weight as he did in his bank with money and remarked as how unfit and slow he was with Cardiff City, just take a look at Robbie Fowler now he's arrived in Australia. They say the camera never lies, it's pretty clear that Fowler's body doesn't either.

This is the guy Dave Jones was retain for Cardiff's Premiership assault this season and whom he believed would score 20 goals. Even though he was a guy who treated his time at Ninian Park with little more than contempt in my eyes and completely ruined my previously favourable view of him for his exploits down the years ... even if I thought he had prematurely lost it and been in decline for 6 years before arriving at Ninian Park.

Five months in the Premiership with Blackburn Rovers followed by 5 more months seemingly as a couch potato (or should thta be couch chips?) at home means Fowler has a major battle to get himself into any sort of shape even to compete in Australian football. It surely underlines how Dave Jones and Cardiff City had a very lucky escape.

This Report Comes from the Australian Daily Telegraph

"Robbie Fowler a 'God' in weighting"
By John Taylor - The Daily Telegraph - April 30 - 2009

ROBBIE Fowler, one of the biggest-name footballers to sign for an Australian club, already has tongues wagging - not about his exploits for Liverpool but his body shape.

The man they still call 'God' in Merseyside has three months to go to get himself in good physical condition before he makes his debut as North Queensland Fury's marquee player in the A-League.

As our picture shows, Fowler could be mistaken for one of the characters in the SBS TV series Nerds FC. But he is actually training with the Fury.

Fury coach Ian Ferguson insists his prized capture is not overweight. "He's fine. He's got no problem with his weight," he said yesterday.

Since his second spell with the Reds came to an end against Charlton on May 13, 2007, Fowler has played limited football with Cardiff City and Blackburn.

Despite Fowler's magnificent goalscoring feats in the English Premier League, Ferguson has made it clear to him that playing in the A-League certainly won't be a stroll in the park.

Mass Murderer or a Visionary who knew Swine Flu was coming??

You Decide!

Swine Flu Over the Cuckoo's Nest

It's a crazy world, don't know whether just to laugh off or be a tad worried this swine flu which has reached such a level of awareness this past couple of days, everyone's suddenly forgetting recession, Susan Boyle the Hairy Angel, Cardiff City doing their utmost to **** up getting into the play-offs and the laughable government this country has.

Tonight the World Health Organisation have raised its alert to Level 5. Only one step higher than that - presumably reserved for scurvy and bubonic plague!

Meanwhile, the gags are going round. Protect yourself from Swine Fever with Oinkment, call the Helpline for Swine Fever advice and all you get is crackling on the line.

Can't worry about it yet but I'm starting to get the feeling it will dominate our lives even more over the next month or so.

Right, I'm off for a good sneeze and sleep.

Watford fined and censured for Ninian Park protests

Watford have been fined £7,500 and severely censured by the F.A. for failing to control their players at Ninian Park. Got to admit my surprise at this and not even knowing they had been charged, it seems very harsh.

The flashpoint was Cardiff being awarded a penalty with the last kick of the game after a Watford player was adjudged to have handled the ball. There was confusion with the linesman apparently not prepared to award it and the ref did, the ref standing by his decision after consultation and Ross McCormack socred to give Cardiff City a 2-1 winner.

The FA statement read: “Watford admitted the charge of failing to ensure its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and the result was confirmed at a personal hearing.”

Having seen tv replays, I thought the decision to give the penalty was correct. I'm not so sure at all the decision to censure and fine the club is right at all however. Hard Luck Hornets.

Gunter doesn't rule out Forest stayover

Gunter - can't see the wood for the
trees at Nottingham Forest

Having seen Nottingham Forest survive an immediate retrun to League One during his loan time from Spurs, ex-Cardiff City player and City fan Chris Gunter has spoken of his relief and that he may return.

Gunts told the Forest website today, "There's a lot of ifs and buts but if I went back and, for example, Tottenham said 'you're still 19 and need to go out and play more games' and if Forest wanted me, I'd genuinely feel there wouldn't be too many better places to go than here. It is definitely something to look at, it's been brilliant."

Not too many better places? He hasn't been looking hard, has he?

Spanish Armada heads for the new Cardiff City Stadium

VALENCIA, former European finalists, have announced what has been the world's worst kept secret ... they will be visiting Cardiff City's new stadium.

The news has circulated for a couple of months but is now confirmed to be played Saturday August 1st - a few days after the stadium is officially opened with a game versus Celtic.

The Spaniards boast a few famous names in the shape of Joaquin, David Villa and David Silva. It sounds glitzy, it is glitzy but Cardiff have played a leading European side most summers in Cardiff recently and the games have always proved to be unremarkable never living up to the hype.

Cardiff at home in play-offs 1st leg to one of three side ... IF

When (or should or if!!!) Cardiff City confirm their play-off place this weekend, they now know that they can only finish 5th or 6th and will be facing one of Birmingham City, Sheffield United or Reading in a two legged semi-final with the first leg at Ninian Park the weekend after next and the return at their ground in the following midweek.

That much became clear after Reading won 2-0 at Norwich City last night, a result that means it’s a three way battle between the Brummies, Blades and Royals for the second automatic promotion spot this weekend while Norwich and their well publicised 18,000 season ticket holders look set to join Southampton and Charlton as recent Premiership sides who will be relegated into League One next term.

That’s means no more night time football at Ninian Park and those majestic floodlights have seen their last but City signed that off in style with a 4-1 demolition of Derby County. We can only hope they confirm their play-off spot and make the last ever NP home game a better occasion to remember than the shambles against Ipswich last Saturday in the last league game.

Cardiff City's Statto John Heyda Arrives at Mecca

Cardiff City.com users will be very familiar with John Heyda in Ohio, a Cardiff City statistician extraordinaire who fell in love with The Bluebirds for overseas despite no connections.

His information and research is painstaking and astounding.

I met John a few years ago when he was in Wales at a time the national team played but last weekend he was back to witness Ninian Park's last ever league game. Last Saturday night, he met fellow American Eddie Johnson whom he presented with CardiffCity.comn's Magic Moment Award - the two struck up a frinedship and swapped e-mail addresses.

Met John in The Romilly pub and tonight he was featured in various media including this Wales Online clip.

The game was pants but I'm sure John won't ever forget his visit.

Johnson and Ledley get PFA Gongs

Two of Cardiff City's best performers all season long - ROGER JOHNSON and JOE LEDLEY - have been recognised by their fellow players by being named in the Championship side of the season at the PFA Awards.

The select side also featured 2 Swansea men in Jordi Gomez and Jason Scotland.

Other City men who must have been close to recognition were defender Kevin McNaughton and forwards Jay Bothroyd and Ross McCormack.

Let's hope it's not the final award Johnson and Ledley get this season as City failing to enter or win the play-offs will surely see them leave the club this summer to make the Premiership leaving The Bluebirds behind.

Roger Johnson and Joe Ledley were named in the PFA Championship team of the season.

As you'd expect Champions Wolves provided most players with three. Cardiff, Coventry and Swansea provided two each with Sheffield Utd and Reading having a player each in the line up.

The PFA Championship side were:

Keiren Westwood (Coventry)

Kyle Naughton (Sheff Utd)

Roger Johnson (Cardiff)

Richard Stearman (Wolves)

Daniel Fox (Coventry)

Michael Kightly (Wolves)

Stephen Hunt (Reading)

Joe Ledley (Cardiff)

Jordi Gomez (Swansea, on loan from RCD Espanyol)

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake (Wolves)

Jason Scotland (Swansea)

Joe one one of two Fairwater men honoured on the night as the main award - The PFA Player of the year Award went to Manchester United and Wales' Ryan Giggs

Videos of the Week, Barracudas & Undertones

As the weather's been pretty good for a couple of weeks, instead of the usual April showers, here's hoping we see a great summer as we're due one for sure.

It got me thinking about summer songs from my punky youth and here's a couple to bounce along with.

The Barracudas were one hit wonders but Summer Fun from 1981 (with its American radio intro which is not featured here) was a surfing punkathon. The group, donning the DEVO image, put on one of the worst Top of the Pops mimes ever seen but as lead singer Jeremy Gluck is based around Swansea, I guess it's understandable.

The Undertones are one of the best, if not the best, guitar pop bands ever. The legendary John Peel got me fully tuned into punk and so many other new acts and types of music like nobody else ever can or will and I remember how he championed The Undertones before they even had a label or deal. I was privileged to watch them live a few times and I never failed to leave the venue as a soaking bag of sweat. Here Comes The Summer is not their finest moment by any means but a good tune nonetheless and even more impressive it was a big chart hit considering it was little more than 90 seconds long! (Great keyboard playing on this clip by the way to the comatosed audience! :>) )

Lavernock Point to Penarth

Had to get yesterday's crash to Ipswich and cock up trying to make the play-offs out of my head so went for a walk with the family.

Felt like a change of scenery to the usual places and, by chance, went to Lavernock Point and found a newly liad cliff top pathway that runs from there to Penarth Headlands with a few beach access points in between.

On one of the points, managed to find a walkway that went 300 yards out to sea at low tide. The sea was like a pond today, unbelievably quiet and still.

Champ Game 40: CARDIFF CITY 0 IPSWICH TOWN 3

After suffering their worst away defeat for 31 years last weekend then fighting back to claim an inglorious midweek draw at the Championship’s worst and already relegated side, Calamitous Cardiff City now ruined Ninian Park’s last ever league match, finished their automatic promotion hopes and left their play-off chances in extreme jeopardy by crashing 3-0 at home to Ipswich Town.

Photos can be found at:
http://nigelblues.blogspot.com/2009/04/cardiff-city-0-ipswich-town-3-in.html

City should still make the play-offs but confidence is sinking fast and anything anyone can cock it up, then our lot certainly have the look of being more than capable. Swansea lost at Sheffield United so their season is over (fair does, they did well though) but Preston grabbing a late win from behind at Birmingham in an evening game was a further shock and means Cardiff still have it all to do.

The combinations for City to make the play-off are;

- Securing just a point at 11th placed Sheffield Wednesday who can get no higher.
- If they lose, only Preston and Burnley have to win their final matches to pass City (both are home to QPR and Bristol City respectively).
- If City lose and Preston win, Cardiff can still make it by matching or bettering the number of goals scored by Preston (i.e. if they win 1-0, we lose 1-2)

How Cardiff have got themselves in this situation in the first place is deeply worrying. Two terrible defeats in the last 3 games and how can a side who lost just 4 of their first 31 Championship games now lose 5 of their last 14, the majority to ordinary sides? In Ninian Park’s send off, City were bloody awful and looked more faded than the stadium itself.

After a bright start and another missed penalty, City individually and collectively fell apart. No shape, no movement, no closing down players, completely unhinged and disjointed, truly awful goals conceded and some bizarre tactics and substitutions. In some ways, it felt fitting to those of us who attended Ninian Park regularly in the 80’s and 90’s were ‘treated’ to this type of debacle all too regularly.

However instead of the 3,500 hardcore City fans sparsely dotted around the place then, Ninian Park was yet again a home-sell out, thousands more would have been there if they could have. The poignancy of the occasion, however, was diminished to some extent by the likelihood (I hope!!) that there will be more 1 more game – a play-off semi-final leg.

If that pushes us towards Wembley and within 90 minutes of the Premiership, I hope that’s how I remember our 99 year grand old lady rather than today’s fiasco which, to rub salt into the wounds, ended in high farce as the crowd were made to wait over 15 minutes for a ‘grand celebration’, the kicking of 300 autographed balls into the crowd and a firework display.

On trooped an embarrassed looking squad in white t-shirts (they may as well have been white flags after this surrender), the sort of pyrotechnics that anyone can perform by holding a matchstick to your ar*e after a curry and the cheapiest, nastiest seaside plastic balls that, with a swirling wind, the players couldn’t even kick into the front row of stands. Even Poundland would have been too embarrassed to sell them! My lad got one by running pitchside, his was signed by only 3 players (Rae, Gyepes and I haven’t a clue who the third is but that doesn’t matter – those balls won’t last 2 weeks anyway).

That shambolic send-off matched City’s performance. Heavy rain had been forecast but the only shower were those players in blue on the pitch.

You hoped City’s highly unimpressive display but stirring fightback at Charlton in Tuesday would have been sufficient to overcome nerves and instil confidence and Dave Jones was boosted by the return of Kevin McNaughton and opted to start with Chris Burke, City’s inspiration off the bench in midweek, for the continuing out of sorts Michael Chopra. City still had no goalkeeper back-up with Dimi clearly not going to be allowed to play for the club again and you have to wonder what Stuart Taylor’s mystery injury is about or has he been punished after criticising City’s display and his defence at Preston as embarrassing? Either way and unconvincing as our keepers have been, it weakens City at a crucial time.

CARDIFF CITY: Heaton; McNaughton-Gyepes-Johnson (Rog)-Kennedy; Burke-Rae-Ledley-Parry; Bothroyd-McCormack. Dave Jones continues to play silly buggers with his subs bench. Apart from no keeper, this time he chose 2 defenders and dropped the rather silly midweek choice of prospect Adam Matthews given it was a crucial game, dropped Scimeca and brought back McPhail and continues to ignore players like Quincy and Whittingham who can provide impact. So it was Comminges-Chopra-Johnson(Eddie)-McPhail-Purse this time.

Ipswich came to South Wales with little to play for stranded in 10th and too far away from play-off contention. When boss Jim Magilton was sacked on Wednesday and a coach with a comedy name of Bryan Klug was announced as caretaker, it seemed their season was over yet next day, they shocked the football world by announcing Roy Keane as manager. Keane announced he would watch from the Grandstand – becoming Ipswich boss was a novel way to blag a ticket for City’s last Ninian Park game – but ended up controlling affairs from the dugout.

They also had a formidable away record – the Championship’s third best – and in 2009 alone, Cardiff became their latest scalp to go with Crystal Palace, Barnsley, QPR and Reading.

Ipswich: Richard Wright, Balkestein-Bruce-Campo-Richards; Garvan-Norris-Peters- Giovani; Lisbie-Counago.

Anticipation was fantastic but build-up was suitably low key with so much on the line but a few stirring anthemic tunes took an already hot atmosphere a notch higher. Both sides came out accompanied by a couple of flag bearers, the Canton Standers were treated to those annoying inflated ‘clackers’ but the biggest blast of noise came as Ali called, “let’s make some noooooiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiisssssssssssssssseeeeeee”.

A humorous moment before kick-off as both sides ran to the Grange End goal to warm up, Cardiff sent Ipswich on their way to the Canton End, little did we know that we be the only battle we’d win all afternoon.

I’ll keep the report of the game brief partly because it was crap and mainly because it’s too painful to go into detail about. However Cardiff City started very brightly and had the crowd 150% behind them and nearly nicked a goal in the opening 30 seconds as a poor Alex Bruce back-pass saw Wright have to take on Bothroyd under tremendous pressure and scramble away, Wright quickly created more work and pressure for his keeper with a poor clearing header that dropped under the bar..

The place was rocking and City applied strong pressure, the one problem being they were guilty of overplay and too much football instead of just going for the jugular. Nice touches but rarely going anywhere it hurt The Tractor Boys and that included a succession of corners that were whipped in but City couldn’t get on the end of them although Ledley was unlucky to see an effort blocked.

However pressure eventually told as, 13 minutes in, Chris Burke beat his man again and swung a cross over that saw the veteran Ivan Campo take down Roger Johnson when the ball was easily clearing the two of them. A penalty without question.

City celebrated wildly and up stepped McCormack who was denied by Preston’s Lonergan last week and, horror of horrors, he was denied by an equally superb stop, if not better, yet he chose to place the ball in the same place as last week. McCormack has been rolling penalties into corners recently – only he will know why he’s suddenly changed to blasting them low but one thing I do know is that his head went and he faded badly from the game and when he had the ball, he was doing way too much and losing it time after time, his confidence shaken.

The warning signs were there for City as Ipswich were starting to look dangerous breaking forward with Giovani looking a real threat and giving Mark Kennedy, not for the first time recently, some real problems while City’s intensity had waned as moves broke down and passes went astray.

Bruce’s haphazard afternoon came to an end in agonising fashion just before the half hour as he tackled Ledley on the touchline and fell on his thumb either dislocating or breaking it. The Grandstand called out to him, Bruce looked up only to see most of Block F and Lower Grandstand giving him a thumbs up gesture!

Ipswich shuffled their pack and brought on the dangerous Jon Stead , another forward, which signalled their intent but City cranked it up another notch with Joe Ledley a fraction away connecting with a pass behind the defence as he set up a move and went on a terrific charge and the impressive Burke shot from 20 yards, Wright saved with his chest but City’s forwards just didn’t react.

10 minutes before the interval, it all started to unravel as Ipswich took the lead with a goal that underlined Cardiff’s inept defending of the past week. A simple ball over the top and – also not for the first time recently – Gabor Gyepes found himself not only out of position but wrong side of Stead, the former Blackburn and Spurs man bursting into the box and then cutting the ball back into the path of COUNAGO who swept home unchallenged from 12 yards. Far too simple.

Cardiff were affected and looked more lethargic and became more sloppy after that setback, the previously buoyant crowd became subdued as there was nothing for them to get behind although they tried to lift the side. Just before the interval, City almost levelled as an excellent Kennedy cross just failed to find Bothroyd but City had lost their way and it was concerning.

Half-Time: CITY 0 IPSWICH 1

Half-time saw Danny Malloy, City’s Captain when they were last in the top flight in 1960, do a lap of honour. Sprightly at 78, his movement and pace still looked a yard quicker than City’s laboured and torturous second half display which was little short of pathetic. Everything they’ve done well all season was completely absent.

I felt sure would come back with a response and fired up but they succeeded in getting even worse and the goal that put them two behind on 54 minutes was a shocker. Paul Parry was fed the ball and was one on one with an Ipswich defender running to the penalty area but he never looked like bursting past him for a moment and feel to the floor producing 20,000 groans. It got worse as Ipswich switched the ball downfield where Jon Stead was allowed to turn and shoot, get the ball back and lay it into the path of DAVID NORRIS who, just like Counago in the first half, had the luxury of firing home unchallenged, a good shot though but City’s play was shambolic.

There was a double sub for a ridiculous one. Off came McCormack for Chopra but then off came Paul Parry (to more than a few cheers) for McPhail. OK, the players brought off were misfiring but to my mind, the ones brought on (McPhail in particular) meant we were even less attack orientated in a game we were losing 2-0.

Cardiff became more and more fragmented, clueless, patternless and just a complete mess. They pushed forward but created nothing worth getting excited about other than a couple of flashed efforts across goal.

Eddie came on late for Gavin Rae and did make Wright produce a good stop but there was no way back, City even threw Roger Johnson up front but with players switched about all over the park, I didn’t know where they were supposed to be and what they were supposed to be doing. If I didn’t know better, I think the players felt that as well.

Taking risks and having no ideas, a third goal was always on the cards for the visitors and it came in added time. Another masterclass in defensive stupidity as Haynes’ 25 yard free-kick was tipped onto a post by the stretched Tom Heaton but as the ball rolled across his goal, City players were motionless and STEAD followed up to tap home for their third gift goal of the afternoon.

Boy, that was crap and there are immense worries. We don’t have a goalkeeper to feel confident about. Mark Kennedy is now being targeted by opposition sides for his lack of pace and is struggling badly in recent games. Gabor Gyepes has lost his way at present, how can someone so good and so consistent suddenly become so poor? Roger Johnson still doesn’t look right after his Crystal Palace trauma. Midfield is a mess with only Joe Ledley giving it everything although Chris Burke along with Kevin McNaughton were the only other players who can escape criticism. Up front, McCormack’s hot spell has passed and he’s at a low ebb, Chopra is struggling for fitness and Bothroyd was unbelievably poor today offering nothing in the box whatsoever. If it was a one-off, it could be understood but this is the third time in a horrendous week the story is the same.

A day that should have been one to remember really was another one to forget, especially as we were then made to wait 15 minutes for the end of Ninian Park fiesta that was a fiasco on a par with the match itself. The story has got to be different next week. To lose form is unfortunate, to let automatic promotion slip away is a cause of annoyance but to think we may now miss the play-offs would just be unforgiveable.

Tonight's Cardiff City Phone-In

Tonight's show aired on GTFM was a CardiffCity.com messageboard special with Gaffa, Chris Nelson and Dave Sugarman. Chris and Dave are known as Heathblue and The Lone Gunman on the MB.

Ouch, my bloody finger!!

Frank Spencer-like, I successfully managed to slam my car door on one of my fingers yesterday.

It's not broken but sore, badly swollen and very painful. To make it worse, it's not just on my writing hand but one of my two typing fingers!!

It made me realise how much we rely on our digits. Wiping my ar*e was no fun as it's a finger I actively use to do that (you try taking one of your fingers away and see what I mean), showering my hair was woeful I'm currently walking about with a finger permanently pointing at present.

Had to share this, I'm feeling sorry for myself. :>)

Lampard wants to lamp someone

Chelsea and England star Frank Lampard called a London phone-in today to complain about a talkshow presenter criticising him for staying in his marital home while his wife and children moved out.

His wife had her say about her unhappiness in the morning press, the presenter picked up on it, Frank had his say.

Emotive stuff!

Video of the Week - ATHLETE, Westside

Athlete can be a love them, hate them or ignore them group.

I loved them from the outset, just their quirkiness and although they have some shoegazing tunnes, they have some belting songs in their armoury and never fail to impress me live, the sort of group you just smile at and can throughly enjoy.

The last album, Beyond The Neighbourhood, could have propelled them into the stadium environs but went the other way which was a shame although it wasn't my favourite.

The boys are back with a new album out in a couple of months and a major UK Tour visiting just about everywhere including Cardiff Uni of Friday June 19th - I will certainly be there!

Here's one of those early stand-out tunes, Westside and for a bonus, check out Half Light live at 2005 T in the Park, Scotland.

Roy Keane uses novel method to attend sold out Ninian Park's last ever league match

After overnight and early morning speculation, Roy Keane was unveiled as Ipswich's new manager so his first outing will be facing Cardiff City this weekend although he will be on a watching brief only as 15 Ipswich players are out of contract this summer and leave first team affairs for the day to coach Klug.

Keane, who famously castigated football's so called prawn sandwich brigade, should feel at home with his company tractor.

To me, it sounds a marriage made in hell and the fact former failed Cardiff City boss and Ipswich star Russell Osman has hailed the appointment only confirms my suspicions it could be pure comedy gold and doomed.

Should make an interesting occasion this weeked at Parc Nin even more interesting.

Celtic to open new Cardiff City stadium

Loovens set to return to City ...
for one night only

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell told Cardiff's official website: "We are pleased to play our part in the opening of such a prestigious new venue.

Cardiff City will officially open the new £50million stadium on Wednesday July 22 with a prestige pre-season friendly against Celtic.

With the usual blurb and hype,
Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell told City's official site: (www.cardiffcityfc.co.uk) "We are pleased to play our part in the opening of such a prestigious new venue. It will be a fantastic occasion for both sets of supporters."

The by-line to the game being it's an occasion to
remember Celtic's legendary boss Jock Stein, who died at Cardiff's current Ninian Park home after a World Cup qualifier in which Scotland qualified, at Wales' expense, for the finals in Mexico in 1986.

This is not believed to be the first game at the new ground as City will play former F.A. Cup opponents Chasetown in a low capacity game and have lined up a further game against Spanish side Seville.

City's pre-season will also include friendlies in Madeira.

Ipswich keen on Keane

NOT THEM ....

....

HIM!
No sooner than Jim Magilton being scaked, Ipswich Town are believed to have dropped hints that they wish Roy Keane to be their new boss.

Keane left Premiership Sunderland last December a disillusioned man and having to appeared to have lost the managerial plot but it's easy to see what the attraction of him may be.

If The Tractor Boys really do want him, it appears they are yet to make any approach with Keane's lawyer declaring that he knows nothing about it.

All that suggests there is no possibility that we will be in the dugout facing Cardiff City this Saturday in Ninian Park's last ever league game. It is believed the exotic name of coach Bryan Klug will be in temporary charge for them as City bid to confirm their play-off berth and sign off Ninian Park league football in style.

BBC's Top 10 Memories of Ninian Park with excellent video clips

Not sure I entirely agree with this list at the link but I thoroughly enjoyed video clips of a boxing classic, Wales games, City beating Real Madrid, Nathan Blake's stunner against Manchester City Some stirring moments to be seen.
